First, be sure that your student is planning to take the make-up exam at a Campus Test Center and not with the virtual proctor. To get started, open your ICON site and then, open the Proctored Exams Portal

  1. Click the blue Manage button next to the original exam request that the student will make-up. From the menu that appears, select Clone to make a copy of the original exam request.
  2. Remove the word "Copy" from the Exam Name and adjust the title of the new proctored exam request as needed.
  3. Choose "Individual" for the Audience.
  4. Choose the Delivery Method "Iowa City test center only."
  5. Adjust the Window start and Window end and Duration if necessary.
  6. Do not edit the Exam Source field or the Exam File field.
  7. Adjust the Materials Allowed if necessary.
  8. Add optional Proctor Instructions or Student Instructions if necessary.

If your student plans to use the virtual proctor for the accommodated or make-up exam, you do not need to add a new proctored exam request in the portal for your student. Simply assign the student to a different exam window in the Quizzes page in ICON, and add a second quiz attempt for the student if necessary.  You may also contact exam-services@uiowa.edu for assistance.

Retrieving completed paper exams

By default, completed paper exams are scanned and uploaded to the Proctored Exams Portal and the original exam is placed in secure storage.

To retrieve the scanned copy from the portal:

  • Select the Manage button and select Scheduled Students.
  • Select the "View" link in the Uploaded File column.
  • A PDF of the completed exam will open in a new window.

Completed paper exams cannot be returned via campus mail. If you would like the completed exam returned, please notify us in the Proctor Instructions field when you create your exam request. Be sure to indicate who is authorized to pick up the completed exam.

Paper exams are processed by proctors before being set aside for pickup, and completed exams can generally be picked up at the location the student tested.* We recommend picking up completed exams the business day after your exam window closes to allow sufficient time for processing. A University of Iowa ID will be needed when picking up completed exams.

*When we operate the Overflow Test Center during finals week, the paper exams completed there are returned to the North Campus Test Center (W216 CB) at the end of each day for secure storage or instructor pick up if requested.

Make-up exams from a prior semester

The Proctored Exams Portal becomes inactive for students once a semester concludes. Because of this, proctored exam requests from prior semesters must be handled another way. Please visit our webpage to learn more about taking make-up exams from previous semesters.
