off-campus test centers

A small number of University of Iowa online courses require students to complete paper exams so the instructors can see students' work. Students who are not in the Iowa City area can arrange to complete proctored paper exams at an off-campus test center.

If your course requires proctored paper exams and you are not able to complete exams at a Campus Test Center, follow these steps at least 10 business days before your exam date(s) to allow time for proctor approval and exam processing.

1. Locate an acceptable proctor

It is your responsibility to contact a person in one of the following roles and ask if they proctor exams.

  • libraries (public, school, or college libraries), learning centers, or testing centers;
  • administrators or faculty of accredited post-secondary degree-granting institutions (e.g., registrars, deans, directors, or faculty);
  • for students in the military: education officers or commanding officers;
  • for incarcerated students: directors of educational services at correctional institutions;
  • for students living outside the United States: a proctor whose position is equivalent to one of those listed above or an administrative official of a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

2. Confirm they can proctor for you

Once you locate a test center or proctor in your area:

  • Ensure they are able to proctor your exam(s) during the exam window(s) set by your instructor.
    • If the organization or individual does not have availability during the exam window, consider contacting a different proctor or making alternate arrangements with your professor.
  • Confirm they can fulfill the the following proctor duties:
    • verify the identity of the test taker matches the identity of the student enrolled in the course
    • supervise the test taker during the entirety of the exam
    • prevent the test taker from using any unauthorized aids or tools
    • collect the completed exam from the test taker and return it to Exam Services within a reasonable amount of time
  • To avoid the appearance of impropriety, no relative, work supervisor, tutor, or immediate employer (regardless of academic qualifications) may proctor an exam
  • Exams must be administered at an institutional or business address only; exams CANNOT be administered at private residences.

3. Submit the Proctor Approval Form

After you locate an acceptable test center or proctor and confirm the organization or individual is able to proctor for you, click on the yellow button below to submit the required proctor information to Exam Services for review and approval.

  • Exam Services will use the information submitted on the Proctor Approval Form to verify your proctor’s eligibility.
    • We will contact you for clarification if we need additional information about your proposed proctor.
  • Once your proctor is approved, Exam Services will email your exam(s) to the proctor and notify you via email.

4. Schedule your exam appointment(s) with your approved proctor

Make sure you follow the process required by the off-campus proctor to schedule your exam appointment(s) once you receive the email from Exam Services confirming your proctor is approved.

To protect the integrity of the examinations, Exam Services reserves the right to reject any proposed proctor or any previously approved proctor.

  • If your proctor is rejected, you will need to select a different proctor and submit a new proctor approval form for consideration and approval.
