Honorlock for instructors
Distance and Online Education has been using a virtual proctoring tool since 2015. If you request online proctored exams for your Online or Hybrid course, Honorlock is the tool your students will use to take exams without coming to a Campus Test Center.
Before the exam
Prior to taking an exam, your students will need to download the Honorlock extension for Chrome. Honorlock provides a simple single-click test to verify that Honorlock requirements are met.
- Encourage your students to take the Practice Exam and visit the Exams module provided by Exam Services and available in your ICON site.
- Be clear about academic misconduct.
- Send exam reminders.

Honorlock settings
Exam Services will apply the following settings to your Honorlock exams in ICON. These settings block specific student actions and record student data, which is captured, analyzed, and stored by Honorlock.
- Record webcam - Record student's testing environment using webcam
- Record screen - Record student's screen during exam
- Record web traffic - Log student's activity during exam
- Student photo - capture student photo
- Student ID - capture ID photo
- Room scan - record a 360 degree environment scan
- Browser guard - limit browser activity to exam content only
Honorlock make-up exams
You do not need to add a new proctored exam request in the portal for your student to complete a make-up exam using Honorlock. Simply assign the student to a different exam window in the Quizzes page in ICON, and add a second quiz attempt for the student if necessary.

Prepare your students
Make sure your students know where to locate exam details, how to prepare for and use Honorlock, and what to do in the event of a problem.
During the exam
On the day of the exam, your students will complete a 60-second verification process and are prompted to show identification and then complete a room scan. Recording starts at the beginning of the verification, and students begin the exam once the process is complete.
During the exam, Honorlock flags student behaviors which indicate potential misconduct (i.e. copy/paste into search engines, opening other documents or programs, moving face out of view of webcam, other people in the testing area, talking, use of cell phone) for instructor review and evaluation.
Once the exam is submitted, the Honorlock extension is no longer active and does not block or record student activities.
After the exam
After your exam window closes our staff will review the Honorlock recordings and notify you of students who demonstrate suspicious behavior. Determining whether a student has committed academic misconduct, and appropriate next steps, remains at your discretion as the course instructor.
Select the yellow button below for step-by-step directions to review Honorlock recordings, a complete list of guidelines UI students receive for using Honorlock, and sample student messaging you can modify and use to address questionable exam activity.
